The City of hitmen

Have you ever imagined a bustling tourist city where three percent of the population are actually active hitmen? Welcome to Fukuoka city's Hakata ward, home to an incredibly lively underworld. Beneath its peaceful daily facade lies a gathering place for some of the world's most dangerous individuals.

This isn't just a place for quick assassinations; it's also the playground for private detectives, hackers, and even torturers. Their lives intertwine to paint a complex, danger-filled portrait of society. Would you dare to step into this dark world of conspiracies to uncover the truth?

An Unlikely Odd Couple

At the heart of the story is an unexpected partnership between two total opposites. First, we have Zenji Banba, a scruffy-looking detective who absolutely lives for traditional ramen and baseball. But don't let his carefree attitude fool you—behind it lies an extraordinary set of skills that very few see coming.

Partnering up with him is Lin Xianming, a professional hitman from China with a penchant for cross-dressing and deadly knife skills. He came to Japan to search for his younger sister, all while carrying a massive family debt on his shoulders. Their reluctant alliance leads to some incredibly funny banter and entertaining chemistry.

A Colorful Cast of Characters

The story's world truly comes alive thanks to a brilliantly developed supporting cast. We have Enokida, a genius hacker who provides crucial intel for cases big and small. Then there's the bizarre duo of Jiro, a terrifying torturer, and his young assistant, Misaki.

And we can't forget Saitoh, a clueless newbie at a hitman agency who is hilariously clumsy at his job. There's also police detective Shigematsu, who quietly feeds tough cases to Banba's agency. Together, they form a complex yet tightly-knit network.

The Phantom baseball Field

One unique twist that sets this series apart is when these hitmen and detectives join forces to form the Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens baseball team. Can you picture a bunch of professional killers running around a field with pure, youthful passion? Teammates like Yamato, Martínez, Saeki, and Genzō Goda bring a surprisingly warm sense of camaraderie to the group.

Yet amidst these fun games, the urban legend of the Niwaka Samurai—a killer who hunts other hitmen—constantly looms over the underworld. The mystery of their true identity is a major plot hook that drags everyone into a high-stakes clash. This blend of sports and gritty action gives the story an irresistible charm.

Why You'll Love It

This series has some fantastic strengths that will keep you hooked from the very first page.

• Fast-paced storytelling: The plot moves at breakneck speed, with conflicts rising and resolving beautifully without dragging.
• Great character chemistry: The banter between the main duo and the supporting cast delivers plenty of genuine laughs.
• Perfect emotional balance: It masterfully blends gritty, bloody action with heartwarming everyday moments.
• Fresh setting: Turning a popular tourist city into a hitman sanctuary makes for a fascinating and thrilling backdrop.

A Few Minor Flaws

While it's a great ride, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind before diving in.

• High level of violence: Since it explores the underworld, there are some pretty gory action scenes that might not be for everyone.
• Slightly unrealistic premise: Having three percent of the population work as hitmen can feel a bit too exaggerated at times.
• A large cast: Introducing so many characters all at once might leave you feeling a bit lost in the early chapters.

The Verdict

If you love urban action laced with comedy, you are absolutely in for a fantastic time here. However, if you prefer strictly realistic, hyper-logical crime mysteries, the show's signature over-the-top nature might not be quite your cup of tea.

The way it seamlessly blends thrilling action with heartwarming camaraderie is what makes this series so special. So, are you ready to lace up your cleats and step onto the field with the most dangerous crew in Hakata?

Step into the wild world of Hakata to experience heart-pounding baseball games and thrilling investigations with the dynamic duo Zenji Banba and Lin Xianming.
