Premise and Supernatural Worldbuilding
The story introduces us to Kuoh Academy, attended by second-year high school student Issei Hyoudou. He is infamous for his perverted personality and grand ambition of becoming a harem king.
Right on his very first date, he is abruptly murdered by a fallen angel. This event instantly shatters his normal life as an ordinary high school student.
The devil princess Rias Gremory intervenes, resurrecting him as a devil to serve her family. Joining the Occult Research Club, he officially steps foot into the supernatural world.
Hierarchy and Power Scaling Systems
The lore centers around the tense stalemate and shifting alliances among three major factions: devils, angels, and fallen angels. These grand supernatural wars establish an expansive backdrop for the series.
From a worldbuilding perspective, the devil hierarchy system transitions from Reincarnated Devil at the Low-Class Devil tier up to Middle-Class Devil, culminating in the High-Class Devil rank. Issei Hyoudou starts as a mere Pawn in Rias Gremory's chess set.
Through rigorous training and fighting to protect his allies, he gradually advances to a High-Class Devil and obtains his own King piece. The centerpiece of his kit is the Sacred Gear on his left arm, known as the Boosted Gear.
This artifact makes him the vessel of the Welsh Dragon, granting him continuous power amplification. His transformations evolve sequentially through Balance Breaker, Juggernaut Drive, Cardinal Crimson Promotion, and ultimately Diabolos Dragon God.
Character Cast and Relationships
As for the protagonist, Issei Hyoudou is an only child born after his mother suffered two miscarriages. His father, Gorou Hyoudou, and mother, Miki Hyoudou, are everyday humans who remain unflinchingly supportive of their son.
Despite his unabashed fixation on breasts, he possesses genuine courage, selflessness, and an unyielding drive to protect those he cares about. His first true love, Rias Gremory, kicks off a richly layered romantic dynamic.
His core harem consists of Rias Gremory, Asia Argento, Akeno Himejima, Koneko Toujou, Xenovia Quarta, Irina Shidou, Rossweisse, and Ravel Phenex—all eight of whom he has proposed to.
The supporting cast is well-rounded, grounded by his close friends Matsuda and Motohama. Meanwhile, teammates like Yuuto Kiba and Gasper Vladi, alongside mentor Azazel, play crucial roles in his battle progression.
Key Strengths
- Structured progression system: The rank progression from Pawn to High-Class Devil is logical and well-paced.
- Engaging dragon mechanics: The evolution of the Boosted Gear delivers thrilling combat transformations.
- Heartwarming family dynamic: The understanding shown by Gorou Hyoudou and Miki Hyoudou gives the protagonist a strong emotional anchor.
- Rich party dynamics: Characters like Yuuto Kiba and mentor Azazel leave distinct marks on the battlefield.
Notable Drawbacks
- Polarizing humor: Issei Hyoudou's hyper-perverted behavior might alienate readers looking for a strictly serious tone.
- Bloated harem count: Managing eight main heroines can stretch romantic subplots thin.
- Emotionally driven climax resolution: Certain battle turning points rely on emotional outbursts rather than tactical strategy.
