A Breath of Fresh Air in the imperial court

If you are already familiar with the usual breath-taking palace intrigue works, this title will certainly bring a breath of fresh air. The story kicks off when a modern female bodyguard suddenly transmigrates into a treacherous ancient world. She unexpectedly wakes up in the body of Qingye, an ordinary servant deep inside the scheming imperial harem.

Here, she finds herself serving the immensely powerful Consort Kang, Shen Qiuhua. Bringing together deep cunning and practical bravery guarantees dramatic sparks. These two vastly different souls from separate eras are gradually pulled into a point-of-no-return whirlwind of power struggle.

Unique Character Dynamics

The absolute highlight of this novel is how brilliantly the author crafts the two female leads. The favored consort Shen Qiuhua is not only breathtakingly gorgeous, but also ruthlessly cunning and strategic. She masters the game inside the inner court with her sharp intellect and naturally elevated status.

In stark contrast stands Yang Qiong inside Qingye's body—fierce and grounded in reality. Armed with elite skills from her former career as a professional bodyguard, she refuses to be shackled by the archaic rules of the imperial court. Her blunt honesty and combat prowess quickly turn her into an unshakable shield protecting her mistress.

The Thrill of the battle of wits

The plot pulls you through a web of sinister schemes inside the imperial court at a gripping pace. The power games never feel superficial; they are laid out in a tight, logically sound manner chapter after chapter. I found myself completely hooked on every masterly scheme cooked up by Shen Qiuhua to protect herself and her retainers.

The synergy between the favored consort's political genius and the bodyguard's martial power achieves flawless balance. Beyond a simple master and servant dynamic, they evolve into true life-and-death companions. Every step taken through the perilous inner court keeps you on the edge of your seat.

What Works Well

• Two independent, formidable female leads who complement and support each other perfectly through every crisis.
• A tightly woven, logical palace intrigue plot filled with exquisitely crafted mind games.
• A fresh blend of practical tactical prowess from a modern female bodyguard and sharp ancient court politics.
• A romantic slow burn that feels natural and believable, forged through hardships in the inner court.

Minor Drawbacks

• The Girls' Love romance can feel a bit subtle in places, which might leave readers craving fast-paced romance wanting more.
• The pacing during certain battle of wits arcs can feel slow and intricate for some readers.
• Side characters aren't explored deeply enough to add vibrant color to the overarching imperial harem backdrop.

Community Reception

• Novel Updates: 4.5/5.0 (47 votes, checked 04/10/2026). International readers praise the clever combination of the transmigrate trope and thrilling palace intrigue in this work.
• Jinjiang: The work has reached 120,272,544 points (checked 04/10/2026). An impressive popularity score in the Chinese market, though some reviews suggest that the Girls' Love interaction is not yet fully prominent due to the profound nature of their emotions.

Final Verdict

If you love high-stakes palace intrigue paired with subtle Girls' Love romance, this is an absolute must-read. At a sweet 178 chapters, it delivers a seamless, binge-worthy reading experience. This unique love story easily stands shoulder to shoulder with top-tier imperial court novels.

That said, if you're looking for non-stop fluff or immediate romance, it might feel a little underwhelming in sentiment. Even so, the psychological depth and tactical twists will keep you turning pages right to the very end. Gear up for a journey riddled with scheming!
