A Fresh Take on Honghuang
If you are utterly bored of hot-headed protagonists, this novel offers a fresh perspective. The story follows Li Changshou, a transmigrator dropped right into Honghuang before the outbreak of the Fengshen War.
Instead of showing off, he chooses to remain an obscure qi refiner to guarantee safety. However, his master plan to lie low gets derailed when his master takes in a junior sister, Lan Ling'e.
An Extreme Obsession With Safety
Li Changshou epitomizes the protagonist with exceptional strategic thinking. He actively avoids karma and masks his cultivation realm at the fourth stage of Void Return, despite his actual power far exceeding the immortal realm.
He focuses heavily on mastering escape technique, honing divine ability, and formulating poison. His interactions with characters like Ji Yan, Jiu Jiu, and Yun Xiao bring a charming dynamic to the story.
The cultivation realm and World-Building
The power system is coherently structured, spanning from Qi Refinement, Soul Formation, and Void Return to Dao Requital. After milestones like Earth Immortal or Turbid Immortal, characters progress to Heavenly Immortal, Golden Immortal, and finally Saint.
Each breakthrough requires comprehending the Great Dao and surviving a heavenly tribulation. The presence of figures like Xuan Du Great Mage, Bian Zhuang, Zhao Gongming, and Youqin Xuan'ya highlights the sheer depth of the world.
Outstanding Strengths
- Unique character personality: A brilliantly written protagonist who is hyper-cautious, calculating, and prioritizes safety above all else.
- Charming comedy: The hilariously wide gap between his over-preparation and actual reality delivers organic laughs.
- Well-crafted mythological setting: Seamlessly integrates various character arcs into the cultivation narrative.
- Consistent long-term goals: The protagonist never sways from his core objective of lying low and seeking longevity.
Existing Weaknesses
- Slow early-stage pacing: His ultra-cautious lifestyle means early events unfold at a very leisurely pace.
- Lack of bloody clashes: Readers craving non-stop slaughter might find the lack of violent conflict a bit tame.
- Heavy terminology: The complex concepts of cultivation realms and karma dynamics take a bit of time to get used to.
