When Being Broke Leads to Big Trouble

Our story kicks off with a protagonist tasting the bitter reality of being a freshly graduated, unemployed potato. To dodge the relentless, soul-crushing lectures from his parents about getting a real job, our guy decides to pack up and crash at his roommate's place. He thought this would be a peaceful, ordinary refuge, but alas, life loves a good plot twist, and his buddy is far from normal.

It turns out this friend owns a record book filled with stuff that modern science would gladly file a restraining order against. From shape-shifting photographs to a monster that loves playing hide-and-seek inside a scroll painting, everything kicks off a thoroughly strange and supernatural ride. You could say it’s a first-class ticket sending our jobless hero straight into the eye of a supernatural hurricane.

Quirky Tour Guides to the Abyss

Dragging our protagonist down this point-of-no-return path is Jiuye, a highly enigmatic mentor. Under Jiuye's guidance, our main man doesn't just look at photos or admire art anymore—he literally steps into the world of yaoguai. Honestly, the raw curiosity of an unemployed graduate can be far more terrifying than actual sorcery as he slowly gets sucked into these bizarre tales.

He soon realizes he’s no longer just a passive spectator sitting in the nosebleed section. His connection to this strange and supernatural world tightens until the boundary between observer and insider completely blurs. It's like you're staring into a dark abyss, only to realize the abyss is playfully winking right back at you.

The True Nature of the Hunt

This story doesn’t paint a rosy picture where humans and yaoguai skip hand-in-hand under the moonlight. Instead, author Tứ Chi Cước lays bare a far more brutal reality of ancient survival dynamics. In this world, both species have hunted each other for eons, forging a food chain paved with blood and tears.

This complexity is exactly what rescues the novel from the cheap jump-scare horror bin, elevating it to a truly deep piece of fiction. Every mini-arc, from an insatiable boy who can never eat enough to bizarre hidden entities, carries the heavy breath of dark fantasy. It’s a constant reminder that something is always watching you from the shadows, and they aren't looking to make friends.

What Makes It Shine

• Superb execution of a mysterious atmosphere that keeps readers in a constant state of goosebumps.
• Very realistic psychological reactions to the bizarre; no over-the-top, instantly-courageous shonen hero tropes here.
• The world of yaoguai is meticulously detailed, offering a fresh departure from tired cliches.
• Cleverly weaves ordinary slice-of-life elements into supernatural crises, creating a delightful contrast.

Things to Keep in Mind

• The pacing is rather slow-burn, requiring a decent amount of patience to fully appreciate the depth.
• The horror elements can get pretty graphic and eerie, so it's not meant for the faint-hearted.

Community Verdict

• WuxiaWorldEU: 5.00/5 (4.05K views, checked on 05/10/2026), explicitly described as a pure horror series, not a sweet romance.

Who Is This For?

Thrill-seekers and fans of traditional strange and supernatural lore will find this to be an unmissable masterpiece. However, if you are looking for a high-octane adventure packed with flashy battle scenes, you might feel a bit let down by its slow-burning nature. This is the kind of book you sip slowly late at night, when every creak in your floorboards makes you think of that cursed record book.

The story reminds us that the world is much bigger than what meets the eye, and sometimes, "unemployment" is just an opportunity to discover a whole universe of yaoguai right next door. So, don't worry too much about being jobless; who knows, maybe you have a hidden talent for becoming part of local urban legends?

Bottom line: This is a deeply haunting and profound journey into the world of yaoguai, where humans are forced to confront their most primal survival instincts. A true strange and supernatural masterpiece for anyone looking for a genuine urban chill.
