Raising Little Monster

Game And Madmen

Written by Sư Tử Tinh Hệ, Raising Little Monster offers a somewhat gritty setting through a global virtual reality game titled Era of Mushrooms. Spanning 153 chapters, the story tries to break away from typical grinding tropes to paint a picture of brutal survival. However, the initial execution still fails to completely escape the clichés of the gaming genre.

Protagonist Tang Xiao is not some lucky, all-powerful hero, but rather an eccentric and relentlessly persistent biology student. The combination of a hardcore gamer's sharp mind and a scientist keeps him from getting discouraged by countless disastrous failures in the game. This stubborn perseverance is the rare bright spot that keeps me hooked.

Clingy Monster

The complicated bond between Tang Xiao and Jun Tesi—a little red monster that initially looks like a mushroom—is both a highlight and its biggest flaw. From a terrifying, brutal creature, it quickly learns to disguise itself as a human just to cling to its caretaker. This relationship leans more toward toxic possessiveness than a genuinely healthy romance.

Under the guise of the King of Mushroom, this entity displays both destructive brutality and an annoying, love-struck mindset that clings to him endlessly. Its excessive possessiveness creates somewhat forced comedic romance situations, inadvertently diluting the tense atmosphere expected of a sci-fi survival work. I do not think much of this childish romance building.

Shaking Reality

The second half pushes the climax to the maximum when the game turns out to be a real parallel world gradually merging with reality. This sudden crossover causes massive global chaos, turning virtual monsters into immediate, life-or-death threats right before humanity's eyes. The author's problem-solving in this transitional phase clearly starts showing clumsiness.

The plot is somewhat salvaged when Tang Xiao's older brother, who works in high-level management, discovers this secret and launches a large-scale investigation. The appearance of the mysterious character known as Dr. Tang linked to the wave of mass monster berserk incidents builds initial curiosity but gets resolved rather hastily. The political plot threads are cut short quite disappointingly.

Raising Little Monster Review

Valuable Plus Points

  • The novel's biological gaming setup Era of Mushrooms is fresh, boasting a certain academic depth compared to current average gaming novels.
  • Protagonist Tang Xiao has logical thinking, relying not on golden fingers but on his own perseverance and sharp intellect.
  • The intertwining of the monster's unique psychological possessiveness adds a distinct flavor to the romantic subplot.

Regrettable Flaws

  • Jun Tesi's love-struck brain setup gets pushed way too far after turning human, ruining the cold danger of a King of Mushroom.
  • Supporting characters like roommates and the older brother are neglected, lacking the necessary character development to highlight the story's depth.
  • The pacing during the world-fusion phase is too rushed, resolving plot twists relatively hastily and lacking satisfying payoffs.

Final Verdict

Overall, Raising Little Monster is an average sci-fi mixed with romance, failing to truly break out as expected. If you can turn a blind eye to the cheesy romance tropes and rushed pacing towards the end, it is still a decent pick for a change of pace. Just prepare yourself for a journey crawling with dangerous mutant fungal cells.

In short: This is a sci-fi danmei with a great premise but poor execution, barely salvaged by a well-crafted, smart, and persistent protagonist.
