When Destiny Rejects the Villain

Fresh off a spectacular death by self-detonation right in front of thousands of witnesses, the villain Lin Ji is lucky enough to find himself back at the very beginning. Instead of playing the perpetual runner-up who gets crushed by the protagonist's plot armor and dies a horrific death, he decides to dump his tragic destiny and forge his own path.

But of course, escaping the invisible strings of fate isn't that easy for a designated villain. Just as he's about to walk away from the immortal sect recruitment trial ten years prior, he bumps right into the heaven-chosen child of destiny, Lu Xiaobai, and gets dragged right back into the eye of the storm.

A Paradoxical Character Setup

The author does a brilliant job with Lin Ji, crafting him as a textbook beautiful, strong, and tragic character—gorgeous, insanely powerful, but burdened with a miserable fate. Blessed with the cynical pride of someone who has already died once, he carries a cold, no-nonsense attitude, trying his absolute best to keep a safe distance from the plot.

On the flip side, Lu Xiaobai boasts the ultimate invincible aura of a true Dragon Aotian, despite being an orphan with a garbage-tier spiritual root. Underneath his cute exterior and eyes that practically glow with Buddhist compassion, he hides a terrifying cultivation talent that shoots up like crazy.

Flipping the Power Dynamics

The absolute best part of this novel is how it flips the script on the power dynamics in this highly entertaining danmei pairing. Despite being a gorgeous, tragic villain, Lin Ji is the one who takes the top role—strong, proactive, and delightfully dominant.

Meanwhile, Lu Xiaobai, the all-powerful, undefeated protagonist, is perfectly content being the clingy bottom. This paradoxical pairing makes them an incredibly well-matched power couple, delivering hilarious bickering matches that will have you in stitches.

The Highlights

The novel feels incredibly refreshing thanks to several unique, trope-breaking elements:

• A bold reversal of the top/bottom dynamic, breathing fresh air into the tired cliches of modern danmei immortal cultivation novels.
• A natural romance that blossoms through entertaining banter and mutual understanding forged in the fire of shared trials.
• A deep dive into Lin Ji's psyche as a former villain who has genuinely let go after experiencing a tragic life and a brutal death.
• A highly original protagonist in Lu Xiaobai, who perfectly balances pure Buddhist compassion with the absolute, cheat-like power of a Dragon Aotian.
• Excellent pacing that strikes a perfect balance between lighthearted comedy and high-stakes, fate-defying schemes.

A Few Minor Caveats

Despite its strengths, the story does have a few slight stumbles:

• The hyper-focus on the main couple leaves the supporting cast feeling rather flat and starved of screen time.
• A few minor misunderstandings are dragged out longer than necessary, which might occasionally test your patience.
• The immortal cultivation world-building and sect dynamics are a bit bare-bones, serving mostly as a generic backdrop for the romance.
• The pacing drags a bit in the middle with some repetitive moments, lacking those explosive, game-changing plot twists that seasoned readers crave.

Reader Reception

Minor gripes aside, the novel has racked up some seriously impressive numbers online:

• Jinjiang: 53,021,440 integration points (as of October 6, 2026), proving just how much readers adore this villain-meets-Dragon Aotian pairing.

Should You Add This to Your Shelf?

If you're looking for a fresh spin on modern immortal cultivation novels, this is a must-read. The combination of a fate-defying rebirth plot and the delightfully paradoxical romance will keep you hooked until the very last page.

Bottom line: This novel is a breath of fresh air, delivering a wonderfully unique pairing of a proud beautiful, strong, and tragic character as the top and an adorable Dragon Aotian as the bottom as they team up to punch destiny in the face.
